Instrumentation: daegeum (or alto flute) and violoncello
Duration: ca. 8.5′
Composed for Jeong Seung Kim and the Pacific Rim Music Festival

Program note: In Together/Without the flute and cello each ruminate individually on shared thematic materials. Although the two instrumental voices are “saying” similar things, however, each strains to be heard. As a result, each voice ultimately fails to comprehend the similarities in the musical language of the other and the thus remains “together and without.” This piece was originally composed for the Korean daegeum virtuoso Jeong Seung Kim and the Pacific Rim Music Festival in Santa Cruz, California.
